James Nedresky

I came to Kansas with my wife in 1994, getting my first look at a part of the country that I knew nothing about.

I began to explore the Flint Hills, which would soon become a very special place to me, both personally and professionally. This tallgrass region defied the standard preconception of Kansas being flat and uninteresting. I became fascinated by the role that fire played in perpetuating the prairie. As lines of flames boldly transformed the landscape or quietly crept through the night, I was drawn to take a deeper look at this subtle yet dynamic land.
I began a personal photographic project, hoping to make images that evoked the essence and peaceful energy of what made this place so compelling to me. The enigmatic nature of this landscape, both subtle and dramatic, presented a photographic challenge unlike that of other places I had been. Such a vast, open and relatively un-featured land proved to take much more than a few encounters to actually gain an understanding, let alone to visually interpret. I was constantly reminded that in nature, not all beauty is giant in scale, and that often, less can truly be more.

Through this project, I strive to promote an awareness of the beauty, vitality and importance of our largest remaining area of unplowed tallgrass prairie.
