My work seeks to combine a dichotomy of thought processes. I deal with ideas of certainty and uncertainty; clarity and obscurity; and permanence and ephemerality. Creating enables the unseen moments, in the space between opposites, to be seen. Realizing my own finiteness, I search for relationships among the minutiae of daily occurrences to organize my understanding of the larger whole. For instance, I depict portions of objects found within the natural world as a way to examine their importance on a phenomenological level. Seemingly inconsequential thoughts, experiences, memories, and objects become, in my mind, rare moments of beauty. I represent dichotomies by using imagery and abstraction within a single piece. Distinct sections connect ideas and contrasting forms of painting. Clouds, flora, birds, fish, tree limbs, and houses are recurring images in my work. Cloud imagery is a metaphor for the constant presence of God. Clouds seem ephemeral as they change shape, yet God is permanent and unchanging. Flora represent the brevity of physical life while fish remind me of humility and grace. Branches and trees exemplify the desire to lead a connected and fruitful life. I associate abstraction and pattern with the notion of origin. Most
of my pieces begin in an obscure and intuitive way. Repeating marks,
pinholes, words and imagery, visually and conceptually sew microcosmic
elements together. I gain clarify by recognizing patterns among them.
Ultimately my work reflects a seeking and finding of truth and meaning. |
