Art is long. Life is short.-Hippocrates I focus on two directions within my work. I greatly admire the traditional Chinese Southern Song Dynasty Guan ware. The noble, sophisticated and elegant vases from this period astonish me. I create hand built teapots to emulate their regal beauty. Because I am also interested in colorful glaze effects on the surface of my teapots, I try not to compete between form and color. I am constantly searching for new shapes and glazes to integrate into my work. My other direction involves sculpturally constructed dress forms. Runway models have always fascinated me and I have previously studied fashion. I am interested in highly stylized fashionable clothing as well as gestural figures. I apply these similar interests to my sculpture pieces. I express the essence of cloth through different textures, clay bodies and different firing methods. I feel we live in a chaotic environment, filled with loneliness and despair. As an artist, I want to contribute serenity and tranquility for all to share. Perceiving beauty and the positive side of life, as a counter to the negative influences of this world. |
