Phillip Robl

Working in acrylics for thirty years, Phillip Robl continues to explore the universe through abstract painting. “When seen collectively, the paintings reveal my personal vocabulary of symbols that constantly shift as they take on additional meanings. In 1989, while in residence at Rancho Linda Vista near Oracle, Arizona, I encountered a coiled rattlesnake. The coiled line in some of the paintings began as a symbol of danger posed by the snake. This interpretation later evolved into a spiral representation of passageways and eternity. I see my paintings as windows on a floating world, a glimpse of the soul.”

Phillip has taught art in public schools as a Kansas Arts Commission Artist-in- Education. At the Wichita Center for the Arts, he taught painting and drawing for nine years. Phillip has exhibited throughout the Midwest, including two Kansas Artist Postcard Series. He was selected as an artist-in-residence at Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Omaha, Nebraska. Phillip received a Kansas Arts Commission Mini-Fellowship and a Binney and Smith Fine Art Achievement Award.
