The artist, Joe Johnson, grew up in Manhattan, KS and as a high school student had an exhibit in a local coffee house of black and white documentary photos of the troubled youth in our small town that made quite a lasting impression on many of us. He subsequently received a BFA from the Art Institute of California, San Francisco and an MFA from the Massachusetts School of Art, Boston.

His photographs are square format chromium prints that he takes from rooftops (mostly in Boston) in the wee hours of the morning with a long exposure time. Their interesting light quality is the result of this technique. One of the interesting aspects of what Joe does is that he doesn't know exactly what will be the result of these photo shoots since he isn't seeing the amount of light that you see in the photo.
